Shirley Irene Miller, 88, of Shelbyville, Illinois, a beloved mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2023, in her hometown of Shelbyville, Illinois. Born on January 3, 1935, in Shelbyville, the daughter of Lewis and Vera (Ward) Askins. She married Albert Wendel Miller on July 25, 1960, and they were blessed with 27 years together before his passing on February 19, 1988.
Shirley was a dedicated businesswoman who owned and operated the Uptown Cafe in Shelbyville for many years. Her work as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) was a testament to her caring nature. She possessed an innate ability to make those around her feel special and cared for, a quality that was reflected in her personal and professional life. Beyond her work, Shirley had a passion for shopping and collecting collectables. A few of her collections included beanie babies and precious moments figurines. An avid reader, she found joy and solace in the pages of countless books. However, nothing brought her more joy than spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Her gentle nature and loving heart made every family gathering a special occasion.
Shirley was the proud matriarch of a large and loving family. She is survived by her children: Pam (Mitch) Strader of Oakland, Jeannie (Jan) Horenkamp of Marietta, Georgia, and Darlene Dilley of Mattoon. She also leaves behind a proud legacy in her seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. Shirley was one of six siblings and is survived by her sisters: Jennie Lower of Shelbyville, Alice Balcezak of Lafayette, Indiana, Patsy Morris of Kingman, Arizona, and Barbara Foor of Shelbyville, as well as her brother, David (Jodie) Askins of Shelbyville. She was a beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and son-in-law, Brian Dilley. Her love for her family was a beacon that guided her throughout her life, and the bonds she formed with her loved ones were a testament to her loving nature.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 20, 2023, in Glenwood Cemetery. A memorial gathering will be held at a later date. Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Shelbyville is assisting the family.
