Obituary for Thelma Bernadine Wood Allsop-Sloan

Thelma Bernadine Wood Allsop Sloan passed away at her home in Bentonville, Arkansas on Thursday, November 15, 2018 at the age of 102.

She was born July 19, 1916 in a log cabin on the family farm southwest of Beecher City, IL, the oldest child of Charles and Grace Wright Wood.

Her visitation will be held on Friday, November 23, 2018 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and her service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 24, 2018. Both will be at Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Beecher City, IL. Interment will be at Hubbartt Cemetery, Beecher City, beside her two husbands.

Bernadine married John Allsop on September 4, 1937. He passed away on Father’s Day, June 16, 1963. She married Delmar Sloan on August 1, 1964, and he passed away on June 25, 2003. She was a member of First United Methodist Church Downtown, Bentonville, AR and the oldest member.

Bernadine went to the one room Miller School and Beecher City High School after which she went to Detroit, Michigan and stayed with her cousin, Marie Lyons, for 7 years helping with Marie’s children, Mary Lou and Danny, and finishing her education. She then married John Allsop in Anderson, IN and they moved back to Beecher City. They became parents of two daughters, and, when the girls started high school, she started her first job as a soda jerk at Coffman’s Rexall Drug Store. Her next job was at St. Anthony Hospital where she worked for several years and then went back to school and became an LPN. She worked in the office of Dr. Delbert Huelskoetter in Altamont for 9 years before retirement.

In 1964, Bernadine married Delmar Sloan. They lived and worked in Beecher City. After their retirement, wanting to stay busy, Delmar and Bernadine took on the job of mowing the Hubbartt Cemetery, a job they really enjoyed. They took on the responsibility of obtaining and putting up the first Christmas lights in Beecher City with the donations from a lot of people and Bernadine and Joan Wood Evans were chairwomen of the first Beecher City Festival and continued in that role for four more years. She was also instrumental in organizing several All School Reunions and was a benefactor of the Veteran’s Memorial.

Bernadine and Delmar bought a home in Bentonville and spent winters in Illinois and summers in Bentonville where they enjoyed family activities and became regulars at the ballpark and soccer field where they watched their great-grandchildren. They moved permanently to Bentonville in 1999.

Bernadine spent much of her time making quilts. She was not sure how many she made, but it was well over 100. The first one she made was for her first great-grandson, Kenny, in 1984, and the last one was made in 2014. Most of the quilts were given away by her to relatives and good friends. She was at Sharon’s flower shop every day doing paper work – she always said she was counting the money - and also was there on holidays lending a much needed hand. Bernadine was also a collector for many years of Roseville pottery. As was the case with the quilts, she also gave many of her pieces to relatives and good friends. Because of her generosity, many people will have remembrances of her.

Bernadine is survived by daughters, Sharon Phillips and her husband Wayne of Bentonville, AR, Sue Knapp and her husband Edward of West Yellowstone, MT and Carla Graning Burr (to whom she was always “Mommie Bernadine”) and her husband Chuck of Moore, OK.

She is also survived by one sister-in-law, Rosemary Wood of Pana, IL., four grandchildren, Ron Knapp (Rhonda), Sherri Morgal, Terri Tolbert (Mike), Tom Phillips (Susan) a former granddaughter-in-law, Ronda Phillips, ten great-grandchildren, Kenny, Ian (Ashley) and Zac Barczewski, Kaitlin Reese, Wade and Wyatt Phillips, Madison and Jake Knapp, Rusti Harrigfeld (Patrick) and Kristin Morgal and five great-great grandchildren, Weston and Cash Harrigfeld, Marik Wilson, Hazel Maloney and Harper Barczewski, nieces and nephews, John Allsop, Sam Allsop, Sandy Allsop, Lora Allsop Schultz, Lori VanHouten, Linda Lorton Spier, Peggy Logue Moll, Terry Childress, Dennis Childress, Charles Lee Wood, Cheryl Gene Wood Powers, Jeannie Wood Brachear, Will Wood, Trish Braddock, Mary Lou Graning Grawcock, Debbie Graning Ebeling, Donna Graning Schennum, Jill Graning McDuffy, special friends Harold and Amy Frailey, and many other relatives and friends who have been a special part of her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, sisters, Beulah Wood Logue and husband Donald, Helen Wood Childress and husband Elvin, Carol Wood Graning and husband Harold, and brothers, Gene Wood and wife Ernestine Wood Callis, and Herman Wood, nieces and nephews, Lena Wood Devore, Dale Logue Speakman, Carol Ann Logue Sinclair, James Donald Logue, Daniel Kent Childress, Connie Jo Childress Lewis and husband Bill, Sara Lorton Tener, Diana Lorton, Richard Allsop and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Richard Allsop, Sam Allsop and wife Joyce, and Ethel Allsop Lorton and husband Roland.

Pallbearers will be First Sergeant Tom Phillips, Kenny, Ian and Zac Barczewski, Jake Knapp, Wade and Wyatt Phillips, Jean-Claude Rodriguez, Jeff Deaton and Jeff Rasor.

Illinois arrangements are under the direction of Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Shelbyville, IL and Arkansas arrangements by Epting Funeral Home in Bentonville, AR.
