Norman Hammer Obituary

Norman Eugene Hammer, 84, of Moccasin, IL passed away on Sunday, July 28, 2019 at HSHS St. John's Hospital in Springfield, IL.

Norman was born on August 25, 1934, in Altamont, IL, the son of Arnold and Olive (Ziegler) Hammer. He was a veteran of the United States Army. Norman and Carolyn Phillips were united in holy matrimony on January 11, 1958 and were blessed with 59 years of marriage before her passing on December 22, 2017. Norman was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church-Blue Point in Altamont, where he held various offices through the years, and he also served on the Beecher City School Board.

Norman was a lifelong farmer in the Moccasin area, and he retired from St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham. He enjoyed farming, raising cows, gardening, blue grass music, dancing in his younger years, cherry pie and home-grown tomatoes.

Surviving are his children: Debra (Dennis) Bales of Altamont, IL, Douglas (Kimberly) Hammer of Altamont, IL, Pamela (Kenneth) Kaufman of Shumway, IL and Ronald Hammer of Altamont; grandchildren: Jacob (Kathleen) Bales, Zachary (Samantha Headrick) Bales, Adam (Alissa) Bales, Jordan (Ashley) Hammer, Breana (Charles) Johnson, Tony Kaufman, Lisa Nicole (Chad Lystila) Kaufman and Spencer (Rachel) Hammer; great-grandchildren: Vivian, Gwen, Collins, Paisley, Presley, Adalyn and Owen; brother, Howard (Carolyn) Hammer; sisters: Verda Mellendorf and Irma Mellendorf; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and Shirley Kneller.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Olive Hammer; wife, Carolyn; son, Dennis at infancy; sister, Audrey Neu and brother, Arlon Hammer.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 1, 2019 at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church-Blue Point, 14026 N. 500th St., Altamont, IL 62411, with Pastor David Speers officiating. Burial will take place in Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Moccasin Township. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31, 2019 and from 9:00-10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 1, 2019 at the church. Memorials may be made in Norman's name to the St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church-Blue Point "New Window Fund." Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Beecher City is assisting the family.
