Virgil Amos Urfer, 102, of Lakewood passed away at 11:15 p.m. Tuesday (October 6, 2009) at the Shelbyville Rehabilitation & Health Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday in the Free Methodist Church in Cowden with Pastor Barry Long and Pastor Jon Carroll officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday in the Lockart Green Funeral Home, Cowden and one hour before service time on Friday at the church. Burial will be in Mound Cemetery, Cowden. Memorials may be made to the Free Methodist Church in Cowden.
Virgil was born October 28, 1906 in Jasper Co., the son of John and Rosa Von Almen Urfer. He married Pauline Tucker February 10, 1928 in Dollville, IL and she passed away April 17, 1994.
Virgil was a member of the Free Methodist Church in Cowden, IL.His life was his family, farming and church. He was school director of the Frog Pond School Board, Sunday School Superintendent, Class Leader and Lay Pastor at the Tower Hill Free Methodist Church and a substitute rural mail carrier.He was a member of the Free Methodist Church from 1929 to 2009.
Surviving are his sons, Arthur Urfer and wife, Dorothy of Western Springs, IL; Allen Urfer & wife, Faye of Tinley Park, IL and Dean Urfer & wife, Fanny of Tower Hill, IL.;friend, Barbara Watkins of Shelbyville;8 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 4 great- great- grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Pauline; son, Robert, one grandchild; brothers, Clarence, Walter and Alvin and sisters, Mae and Della.
