Elmer E. (John) Townsend, 96, of Gays passed away at 11:46 a.m. Friday (August 7, 2009) in the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Care Center, Coles, County.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday in the Lovins-Lockart Funeral Home, Windsor with Rev. Richard Eident officiating. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in the Windsor Cemetery with military rites. Memorials may be made to the Windsor American Legion Post # 725.

He was born April 26, 1913 near Brownstown, the son of Lewis and Nellie Frances (Williams) Townsend.

He served in the US Army during WW II and received the Purple Heart. He was retired from Caterpillar Tractor Co. He was a life member of the Fairbury VFW Post # 9789 and the Windsor American Legion Post # 725.

Surviving are grandchildren, Dennis Quigley (Theresia) of Fairbury, Rosemary Morrison (Roger) of Windsor and Sheila Crist of Forrest; great-grandchildren, Stacey Quigley (Tony) of Gays, Sean Quigley (Christine) of Washington, Amber Hendrichs (Ben) of Chatsworth, Chris Morrison (Andrea) of Mattoon, Ryan Livingood of Windsor, Courtney Morrison of Windsor and Chelsie Morrison of Windsor; great-great-grandchildren, Madison, Austin, Ethan, Aubrey and Sophia; brothers, Jack Townsend (LaVerne) of Mt. Vernon and Billy Townsend (Linda) of Vandalia; sister Hazel Grames of St. Elmo; special friend Susan Phelps of Windsor.

He was preceded in death by step-daughter Mildred Quigley, step-son Junior Givans and nine brothers and sisters.
