Guy D. Parr, 61, of Shelbyville, IL, passed away at 5:06 AM Friday June 6, 2008 in his home.Funeral services will be held at 4:00 PM Sunday June 8, 2008 at Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Shelbyville (302 W. Main St. 62565).There will be no visitation and no burial service.
Guy was born July 18, 1946 in Shelbyville, the son of Guy Daley and Nannie Glenn Barlow Parr.
He married Marsha Kaplan Valdez on July 16, 1989 in Bakersfield, California.
Guy attended Shelbyville High School, Southeastern Missouri State College, Rend Lake College, Southern Illinois University, Northern Illinois University, Eastern Illinois University and the University of Southern California, where he completed coursework for his Doctorate in Educational Administration.
He began his career as a teacher in southern Illinois, but became a school district superintendent at the age of 26.He served districts as superintendent in Ina, Tamaroa and Budah/Sheffield in Illinois.Guy then was assistant superintendent of the Taft Elementary School District in Central California.He returned to Shelbyville to be superintendent of schools in his own home town.He re-opened Guy’s Steakhouse with his father for 2 ½ years, but decided that he would return to the school business.He became superintendent in Heyworth, IL where he served for four years before retiring.In the “real world”, Guy worked baling hay, shoveling snow, digginga pipeline, building the Lake Shelbyville Dam, driving a truck, selling men’s clothing, furniture, underground storage tanks and fresh fish and most recently, driving for Shelby County Community Services.He was a hard working, conscientious, loving person who never knew a stranger.
Guy was a member of various professional organizations in educational administration.He was a Shriner, and was affiliated with the Mattoon-Jewish Community Center.
Guy had an interest in many activities.He was an avid collector of watches and was a fly fisherman. He loved cooking for family and friends.He was a wonderful son, husband, step-father, grandfather, brother, cousin, nephew and friend.
Surviving are his wife Marsha, step-son David Valdez, USN of Bremerton, WA; daughter-in-law Brandiand the three lights of his life, granddaughters: Alexandra Bess, Andrea Teresa and Emma Belle Valdez; sisters: Bari Lynn(Gary)Spesard of Virginia, Linda Parr of New York, Jayne(James)Smith of rural Shelbyville; brothers: Jerry(Elsa)Parr of Texas, Mark and Van Jon Parr both of Shelbyville; special cousins: Carol Robert Barlow of New Athens, IL and Leslie Parr Flynne of Houston, TX, among many others.
He also leaves a host of nieces and nephews, many good friends, especially Cork and Angie Hagan, Randy and Linda Shuff, Larry and Linda Marsh and his classmates from the Shelbyville High School Class of 1964.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Nannie Parr.
Guy’s family would like to thank Doctors Edward Elliott, Stephen Sobol and Perry Guaglianone, the chemo nurses at Cancer Care Center ofDecatur and the LPN`s, and CNA`s at Decatur Memorial Hospital Oncology Unit for their care and kindness.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, the Mattoon Jewish Community Center, Temple Beth El of Bakersfield, CA or any Shelbyville public project.
