Otis L. Lorton 79, of Cowden, IL, passed away at 4:05 AM on Thursday Sept. 11, 2008 in St. Anthony Memorial Hospital in Effingham.
Otis was born May 13, 1929 in Bowling Green Twp., Fayette Co., IL the son of Lewie Dickerson and Hattie Elizabeth Beck Lorton.
He married Frances Bateman Jan. 1, 1965 in Pana, IL.
Otis was a long time employee of the United States Postal Service having served as a city postal carrier in Austin, TX for twelve years and in Pana, IL from 1964-1985, then as Postmaster in Tower Hill, IL, retiring in 1990.
He was a member of the Cowden Church of Christ and served as a member of the Bowling Green Twp. Board of Directors.
For many years Otis served as a lay minister serving and administering to the needs and concerns of family and friends in the Cowden area.
Surviving are his wife Frances; children: Linda Hattemer and husband Tim of Cantrall, IL, James Lorton and wife Kim of Cowden, IL and Sally Ruot and husband Chad of Tower Hill; grandchildren: Kami Lorton, Carson Lorton, Sue Ann Hattemer and Daniel Hattemer; sister Lorene Gilmore and husband Don of Pana, IL; brothers: Leon Lorton of Cowden and Raymond Lorton and wife Betty of Beecher City, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Ennis.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday Sept. 14, 2008 in Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Cowden.Brother Randy Deems will officiate.Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 PM Saturday.Burial will be in Lorton Cemetery near Cowden.
