Maurice Leo Buchanan, 77, of Herrick, IL answered the call to his heavenly reward at 10:50 PM Friday Sept. 18, 2009.Maurice passed from this life at St. Anthony Memorial Hospital in Effingham, IL with family at his bedside after a five month battle with cancer.
Maurice, a lifelong farmer, was born to Claude Reid and Lola Chamberlain Buchanan on June 21, 1932 at Herrick.He lived in the same home on the family farm northeast of Herrick his entire life with the exception of the two years while serving in the Korean War.
He married Betty Dunahee at Olney, IL on April 9, 1961 and she survives.Besides his wife, he is also survived by two sons Michael Buchanan and fiancée Paula Jett and Mark Buchanan and wife Lisa both of Herrick; two grandchildren Paige Buchanan and Matthew Buchanan both of Herrick; sister Lou Buchanan of Cowden, IL; sister-in-law Bonita Buchanan of Cowden and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Maurice was a member of the First Christian Church of Cowden where he served many years as and Elder and Sunday School Teacher.He was a member of the Sarver-Guthrie American Legion Post #839 of Herrick.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Wilmer Reid (Buck) Buchanan and Ross Thomas (Bud) Buchanan Sr.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday Sept. 23, 2009 at First Christian Church of Cowden.Pastor Tim Boyd will officiate.Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 PM Tuesday Sept. 22, 2009 in the Church.Burial will be in Myers Cemetery at Herrick.Flag presentation will be made by the Sarver-Guthrie American Legion Post # 839.Memorials can be made to the First Christian Church of Cowden, Myers Cemetery or Donor’s Choice.Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Lockart-Green Funeral Home, Cowden.On line condolences may be directed to the family at www.lockartgreenfuneralhome.com
