Hazel Marie Bennett, 91, of Windsor passed away at 1:45 a.m. Saturday (April 26, 2008) in the Shelbyville Manor in Shelbyville.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday in the Lovins-Lockart Funeral Home, Windsor with Rev. Richard Eident officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in Sand Creek Cemetery near Windsor. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church, Windsor Building Fund.

Hazel was born March 5, 1917 in Gays the daughter of Henry and Stella Young Hortenstine. She married Tobias A. Bennett, June 1, 1941 in Gays and he preceded her in death December 31, 2006.

Hazel graduated from the University of Illinois and taught home economics in Stewardson. She later taught in the Sullivan School district for nearly 30 years and was once nominated for the Illinois Teacher of the year. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Windsor where she was a member of the Kum Join Us club and taught Sunday school.She also was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma, Shelby County Home Extension, and Retired Teachers Association. She formerly played the piano at Gays Christian Church, volunteered at Heartland Christian Village, Neoga, a 4-H leader always helping at the fair and was active in many Windsor community activities.

Surviving are daughter, Alice Fay Hobbs and husband, Fred of Montgomery, TX; son, Tim Bennett and wife, Terry of Windsor; grandchildren, Sally Craig of Houston, TX, Matthew Bennett of Windsor and Lt. Ben Craig, US Army, and wife, Kelley of Shepardstown, WV, presently deployed in Afghanistan; great-grandchildren, Olivia Fox, Autumn Bennett, Travis Fox, Bo Bennett and Sophie Craig; sisters, Fern Hill of Mattoon and Ruth Hale of Muskogee, OK; brother Jake Hortenstine and wife, Virginia of Mattoon.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, granddaughter, Jennifer Fox, brothers, Irving, Mark, Robert and Dan and sisters, Helen Reed and Alice Hyink.
